Something a friend said to me recently reminded me of a TW fanfic from years back, the only detail I remember is that Ianto’s mum? Maybe dad? Was a high up Unit official. Ring any bells with anybody? I’d love to figure out what it was and read it again :)

i want to write a torchwood fic soooo bad but i’m so scared bc i don’t think i cld write any of the characters correctly and the last thing i want is to be ooc. it’s a horrifying thought! plus i have no ideas PLUS i never ever end up finishing the fics i write but i want to sooo bad 😭😭 uuugh
#i’ve like Barely written ianto once before but it hardly counts for what it was i think#i also REALLY wanna write dialogue for owen. he seems easy to write dialogue for but like in the fun way#just his word choices and how he talks etc etc it’s the kind of dialogue i love to write#but i don’t know how much i want to write something owen centric sadly lol#i feel like i should rewatch some episodes and take notes#i did that for rottmnt donnie before#i actually have a brief janto fic idea but i’m scared to write jack and ianto Lol

i quite enjoy when torchwood writers play around with a literal deus ex machina as in god from the machine or whatever, somewhat sentient machines striving for perfection, or with an idea of it based on whichever person it has decided to "help" and the horror that situation turns into
#this is about ex machina and almost perfect#they are both ianto centric also which is fun to me#i love when things are taken literally and whej things attack the idea of perfection in such a manner#this does both#also why at some point i NEED to write my ex machina esque ianto reimagined idea DOWN i have not done it though#vidhik.txt

I suppose I'm carrying on my trend of Ianto centric posts, with TWM #1's The Legacy Of Torchwood One.
I remember when this came out. It was so cool seeing a little bit more of Ianto's Torchwood One past. With all of the Big Finish releases, it's all but been retconned out of canon, but it's still a good little piece.
Also interesting to note, the story seems to be set during season two but the layout of Jack's office and the walkways around the watertower are the season one layout.

Bad In Your Blood
https://archiveofourown.org/works/60498382 by CaptainFairyGodmother There were only two constants in life at Torchwood; one, that it was almost a certainty that you would not make it to see your first pension payment; and two, that Ianto Jones and Owen Harper would be arguing. At least one of the constants was preventable- and it certainly was not the arguing. OR; Ianto and Owen are brothers AU, in which Owen's refusal to acknowledge Ianto as his brother- let alone form a familial relationship with him- may just lead to the death of the whole team. if you're asking the question "why are tw fans surprised when I say I prefer Torchwood 1" in good faith - it's because some of us enjoy the show itself (admittedly that is fairly surprising) and characters in it that aren't Ianto
Even then, Torchwood 1 isn't Ianto centric. It's about the mother/father/son dynamic between Ianto, Tommy, and Yvonne. Which is so comforting even with it's dark undertones. Also, Tommy is from Yorkshire. That means so much to me. He's great. Tbh there's no Ianto-centric story in the TW1 range other than Blind Summit. The rest he's paired with Tommy, and stories give balance to both their characters.
The fan who was surprised explicitly believed that there was something wrong with me and blocked me because I liked characters who are morally black regardless. For having a preference? Or acting as if they're watching an actually comforting show and not something which explores human corruptibility.
Plus this is just personal but I can't stand the constant insistence on atheism in Torchwood 3. If feels very RTD. Torchwood 1 at minimum believe in an afterlife. Especially when atp the Nethersphere should be active.

hiya, I just finished reading your Jagged Little Pieces series & I just wanted to reach out to say how much I absolutely LOVED it. the physicality with which you write owen is absolutely wonderful, the descriptions of his movements and emotions feel so true to life. I love love love how often you bring up that he's crying :') I think a lot of fans who aren't as owenpilled end up kind of falling for his tough facade and assuming that he's as prickly as he pretends to be, when really he's so squishy and vulnerable. you captured that element of his personality spectacularly - so many wonderful descriptions of him sobbing and clinging to people and generally being miserable :D. it made me very happy to read, thank you for writing it!!
Thank you! I recently wrote a couple other Owen and Ianto fics - one a shippy fic and the other not - but I really need to jump back in to Torchwood fic! I've had a long term Jack-centric fic in the works but it's not done yet.
Owen is my favorite shithead! I just think he's fascinating because he's so spiky but so unbelievably sensitive at the same time. And his backstory is so interesting. And he's so desperate for human connection and comfort but doesn't know how to receive it without either falling apart or lashing out or both. He's simultaneously so competent and smart and empathetic and also so fucked up and pathetic and lacking in judgment or self control.
I have a very vague concept of an Owen/Ianto/Jack fic in which Ianto adopts a stray/feral dog (a metaphor for Owen) and it learns safety and love and comfort alongside Owen who is unknowingly doing the same and both the dog and Owen become extremely protective of Ianto. I have 2 scenes written for that one but no other structural or narrative bits planned out, but it's there in my head for when more concrete ideas come to me!

Tagged by @princess-of-the-worlds!!! Thank you, bestie!
Rules: post the top 5 works you’re most proud of that you released in 2022 (not necessarily your most popular), your top 4 current WIPs that you’re excited to release in the new year, your top 3 biggest improvements in your writing over the past year, your top 2 resolutions (ways you wish to improve your writing/blog) for the new year, and your number 1 favorite line you’ve written this year!
5 works
1. Bilis Manger, the Demon, and the River
This was very first piece of published smut! Cursed, but still hot.
2. The Seas That Were Broken (Brought Us Together)
My first thasmin centric fic!
3. queens don't stay unless their king treats them right
One of my favourite spuffy fics to write!
4. Please stay with me and don't you leave me alone
Rex/Ianto fic that made me pull my hair out, but it’s my longest fic from 2022, so I am proud of it.
5. Horns and Horniness
Second longest fic! Almost forgot about its existence, but it was very fun to write!
4 WIPs
1. Gwento smut fic
2. Bridgerton Kanthony Crack Fic (technically there are two of these, don’t ask)
3. Merlin Mergwenthur crack and smut
4. a polyamorous Torchwood fairytale AU
3 Writing Improvements
Hmm, I guess pushing myself outside of my comfort zone to write more explicit content was a big one for me in 2022? On that note, also pushing myself to just be more vulnerable in general when it comes to sharing my writing. I took a memoir class where I let myself do so, and it resulted in writing that was some of my best so far, and I’m sure that’ll help with fic writing. I’ve also been trying to play around with using different tenses.
2 Writing Resolutions
1. Try again to get my short story published.
2. Write longer fics.
1 Favorite Line
Since it was Nik who tagged me, I’ll pick a line from the fic I gifted them last fall, Forever... (is a long time).
“It’s been so long,” Jack said. John watched him, curiously. “I don’t have any memories of him anymore, just the information on this.” He held up his left wrist. “A photograph, a date of birth, some small things about him. I know I promised him I’d remember him, but I’m struggling to even do that.”
tagging @horselover107 @shejustcalledmeafish @someawkwardprose @the-mimse and anyone else that wants to steal this!

Tell me about the Torchwood stuff
ok so basically. theres a bunch of alien fighters in wales. and theyre all bisexual. theres plot but it doesnt matter believe me
gwen: main character! not like that ethical but whatever no one in this show is. bisexual. this is true of all characters. badass woman. cop? ex cop? joins torchwood out of moral superiority and then immediately has an affair.
jack: reason i watched the show. you know him. anyways hes worse here. also bisexual (omni? pan? something). basically hes here, he fucks, he does unethical shit, he fucks some more, he cries but hides it.
owen: okay imagine the most annoying man ever. you hate him. okay now imagine loving him because he has genuinely touching moments. you watch this guy have a moment with aphrodiasiac, go "well that was super fucking not okay" and then watch more show and go "fuck i like this gremlin". fucks a man in the first episode (the bad aphrodisiac moment) scientist with buttons on his lab coat (very newt coded for the guy who plays hermann) hes also dead for a considerable bit. fucks gwen (her affair) but ends up (?) with tosh
speaking of: tosh: im love her. computer genius!!! expert in everything, including being amazing and being ignored. has a very fun her-centric episode in which shes bisexual and can read thoughts but it almost made me vomit because jack is transphobic in it. seems soft spoken but could kill. if she wanted to
ianto: you know him. looks like a cinnamon roll has the worst fetishes you can imagine. bisexual as well. dating jack after saying he hates him for killing his evil girlfriend. the reason i cant finish torchwood (and see him DIE??). has a pet pteradactyl. his job is to get coffee and stop jack from becoming a super villian
rhys: hes here. engaged to gwen. straight but made jack say the words "homoerotic tension" on screen. i dont like him but also a god because imagine your girlfriend is running around lying and fucking other men and knows about aliens. and you marry her anyways
and thats torchwood, the TV-MA companion to dr who! theres also a kids show companion and theyre both very good and i didnt finsih either.

Torchwood: Forgotten Lives
INFO - Big finish productions torchwood 1.3 , average goodreads rating 3.71. Length : 1:06:03
My rating - 2.5/5
This review may come across as slightly biased as I have never been the biggest fan of Gwen, through seasons 1-3 I found her slightly unbearable at times especially during her affair with Owen and treatment of Rhys, (I also try very hard to forget about whatever it was her and Jack did or didn't have going on). But then again, I have always been pro-Janto. However, I believe her character really picked up in season 4 'miracle day' when she finally set her priorities straight, and showed just how much she was willing to do and go through for her family. Forgotten Lives was a very Gwen-centric piece of media, other characters including Rhys Williams (husband) and Jack Harkness (although in a different body so not voiced by Barrowman) made an appearance throughout the story. The story was pretty easy to follow and a solid piece of cannon media, although at times I felt myself zoning out and becoming pretty bored, the ending was very hard for me to understand and I found myself having to replay it multiple times. Like what happened to Jack, did he stay an old man or? The thing I did however love about this story is how Gwen's character is written so perfectly, being this story is set after miracle day, and Gwen putting her daughter and husband above her job really made me become more fond of her character. From the beginning it's said how Jack spoke of Ianto in the nursing home, which to me made me sad as a story set after COE Ianto would of passed, so Jack still remembering Ianto is beautiful and the fact he tells stories of him shows how much Ianto really meant to Harkness as he wasn't just another 'partner'. I do know this story is written post miracle, however, it would of made the adventure a lot more entertaining if we saw some more of the OG Torchwood team in action. As a final point to sum up my review, I believe at the end Rhys was extremely out of character, because in what universe would RHYS be the one suggesting that he and Gwen going back to Torchwood? For me Rhys has always read off as a pretty ANTI-torchwood guy, so for him to suggest them going back, when they have a daughter now as well? I could never see Rhys thinking it let alone saying it. This adventure did link back to the committee but other then that it felt more Meh to me.

hi hi hi do I have some lists for you
These three are Gwen centric fic recs:
And here are two rec lists I made a while ago, so they’re not updated with recent ones but they were my favs as of 2021!
I totally get it, when I was actively reading torchwood fic it used to make me insane that there were so many gwenbashing fics out there (that’s what made me start writing) but I think (hope) at least that it’s gotten better!
i need to read a torchwood fic where people are normal about gwen. like i don't even care about the pairing or even a lackthereof i just wanna read one where they don't paint her in a cartoonishly negative light.
#also I am a little obsessed with her so I have written a fair amount of Gwen focused/Gwen normal (lmao what a phrase) fics#gwen cooper#additionally if you want to check out the torchwood archive tumblr there are way more rec lists on there#and the lists specifically are made by the mods usually so they’re all normal about her/love her#but those weren’t Gwen focused so I didn’t add them

hallo friend! i’ve been wanting to get into big finish for more torchwood content, but do you have favorites for someone looking to start slow? (budget restrictions and all) so far i’ve listened to Broken and Fall to Earth and enjoyed both, and you seem like a Reliable Source of BFA recs
As you enjoyed Ianto-centric ones, I'd recommend Restricted: Items Archive, The Last Beacon, Serenity (Janto heaven), and Dinner and a Show. Anything written by GDL is amazing, Tube Strike, Disco, Dinner and a Show, and The Last Beacon. Tube Strike is a nice entry into the Torchwood One range as well. The Last Beacon, and Dinner and a Show will also introduce you to how Owen and Toshiko are written, which can be helpful in exploring the monthly range more. These ones generally are great as they explore character dynamics.
Audios such as Missing Molly, SUV, The Grey Mare, Ex Machina, and The Office of Never Was are heavily centered around the plot rather than characters imo. While the covers look promising, I personally enjoy character-driven audios. I'd class Broken as character-driven, Fall to Earth as plot-driven.
If you hate darker stories, then avoid Corpse Day, The Death of Captain Jack (dark comedy), and The Lincolnshire Poacher.
If you want something more akin to the TV series, then saving for Outbreak and/or Believe would be worth it. Believe is the full original cast, Outbreak is basically season 2.5.
Overall, my highest recs for you are: Serenity, and anything written by GDL (excluding Missing Molly).
-side note: Disco is a prequel to House of The Dead (BBC, not BF)-
